Sweeny Community Hospital sponsors a wide variety of health education classes, special events and support groups open to the public. Some are free, others are available for a fee. Contact information is available with each listing.

Monthly Diabetes Workshop

New Direction Medical Weight Management:
New Direction is a medically supervised very low-calorie diet, utilizing 4 servings of nutritional beverages totaling 800 calories per day. While clients lose weight, they receive medical monitoring, group support and education about nutrition, exercise and behavior modification. To participate in the program, women must be at least 40 pounds overweight and men at least 50 pounds. Patients must also pass a medical and behavioral screening.

A team of experienced dietitians, behaviorists, exercise physiologists, nurses and physicians will help you through the three phases of the program -- Reducing, Adapting and Sustaining. Weight loss averages 2 to 5 pounds per week. Phase One (Reducing Phase) lasts up to 12 weeks. Phase Two (Adapting Phase) begins in the 13^th week and may continue indefinitely, as long as the patient is healthy and losing weight. The Maintenance Phase is optional but highly recommended. It lasts a minimum of 6 months.

COSTS:
Initial Labs and Physical: $195
Monthly Program Fee: $175 (covers all classes, monthly labs, visits with nurses, dietitian, counselor and physician, and use of fitness equipment at The Wellness Center).
EKG: $40, required with each 50-pound loss
Protein Beverage: $25/box, 7 meals per box (average $75-$100 per week)
Maintenance Phase: One-time fee of $240 for six months. In this phase, you no longer pay the program fee.

New Direction is not covered by Medicare or Medicaid.  At this time, Sweeny Community Hospital does not file insurance claims for this program. SCH does accept cash, checks or credit cards and will provide clients with receipts. Some fees may be tax deductible.
